ELV Recycling

All vehicles have a “use by date” and are no longer road worthy, whether it’s due to an accident, vandalism, general wear and tear or old age, they are then classed as End of Life Vehicles (ELVs). ELVs have specific disposal procedures and any company dealing with ELVs must follow these procedures and have the relevant licenses and permits when it comes to ELV disposal.

ELVs require set treatment methods, for example vehicles that have come to their end of life naturally through old age or wear and tear are de-polluted and recycled for scrap metal. Vehicles that come to their end of life for unnatural reasons such as flood damage or vandalism are then categorised by insurance companies to approve ELVs for either dismantling for spare parts only or to be sold complete as damaged-repairable salvage.

The ELV Directive was created in the early 1990s as recognition of the increasing waste portions deriving from vehicles and the poor environmental practices of the traditional car breakers and scrap yards that deal with ELVs. The Directive aims to improve ELV disposal procedures and the facilities used for ELV treatment, with the goal to minimise the amount of wastage from ELVs and reduce the adverse effects ELV dismantling practices have on the environment. All ELV treatment sites must comply with the ELV Directive, demonstrating they are consciously trying to minimise the amount of waste generated from ELV disposal and recover, reuse and recycle waste where possible.

A professional and fully licensed ELV recycling company based in Yorkshire is Mytum & Selby Waste Recycling. Mytum & Selby has been in the waste industry for over 30 years and is fully up to date and compliant with relevant laws and legislation relating to waste disposal, including ELV recycling. Mytum & Selby offer an ELV recycling service where all vehicles are treated accordingly, de-polluting, recovering components and recycling where appropriate.

Allow Mytum & Selby to take care of your ELV and you can be confident your vehicle is being treated and recycled properly.
